The two best teams in the nation not in the BCS Championship will face-off against one another when the Stanford Cardinal and Oklahoma State Cowboys butt heads in this season’s Fiesta Bowl on Monday, Jan.2. Kick-off from the University of Phoenix Stadium is set for 8:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Stanford had a legitimate shot at playing for a national title until a 53-30 loss to Oregon as a 2.5-point home favorite derailed its chances. It finished the season 11-1 straight-up overall and 8-1 SU in conference play. The Cardinal were 10-2 against the spread this season with the total going an even 6-6 in their 12 games.
Much was made about the play of Heisman Trophy hopeful Andrew Luck this season and his 3,170 passing yards, but Stanford also had success running the ball with an average of 207.9 yards a game. This balance on offense made it a scoring machine with an average of 43.6 points a game. The Cardinal defense was ranked 23rd in the nation in points allowed; giving-up an average of 20.3 points a game.
Oklahoma State climbed as high as No.2 in the country this year, but its BCS title hopes came crashing down in a heart-breaking 37-31 double-overtime loss to Iowa State as a 26.5-point road favorite. The Cowboys also finished 11-1 SU overall and 8-1 SU in Big 12 play. They were 9-3 ATS and the total went 4-6-2 in their 12 games this season.
The Cowboys did the bulk of their damage this season through the air with a passing game that was ranked second in the country with an average of 386.3 yards a game. Brandon Weeden was the architect of this attack with 4,328 passing yards and 34 touchdowns while completing 72.6 percent of his throws. Oklahoma State’s defense finished the regular season ranked 61st in points allowed; giving-up an average of 25.8 points a game.
Stanford is 7-0 ATS in its last seven non-conference games. The total has gone ‘over’ in 13 of its last 17 games as an underdog, but stayed ‘under’ in four of its last five games outside the PAC-12.
Oklahoma State is 5-1 ATS in its last six games against the PAC-12 and 3-1-1 ATS in its last five bowl games as a favorite. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last seven bowl games.
While the Cowboys have shown the ability to quickly put points on the board, this game will come down to which team can best control the line of scrimmage and the clock. Stick with the Cardinal to do both over all four quarters as they come away with a straight-up win as 3.5-point underdogs.
