College football underdogs ruled the weekend in conference championship betting action, pulling a couple of interesting upsets and, more importantly, making a little money for those who backed them.
The dogs' good fortune started Friday in the MAC championship game at Ford Field with the Ohio Bobcats, who as 3.5-point underdogs led Northern Illinois 20-0 at the half. Ohio eventually let the Huskies rally all the way back to win 23-20 on a field goal at the buzzer, but the 'Cats held on for the cover.
Later Friday the UCLA Bruins, a week after getting blown away in their rivalry game vs. USC, showed just enough life for their departing coach and financial backers, losing at Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game 49-31 but covering the spread as 31-point underdogs. UCLA got early help from an interception return for a score, and later from what almost looked like the Ducks' unwillingness to run up the score.
Then Saturday in the Conference USA championship game the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, as 12-point underdogs, helped the BCS avoid an additional degree of embarrassment by upsetting the previously undefeated Houston Cougars 49-28. Southern Miss scored first, led at the half and used several big plays to break the game open in the second half.
One favorite to come through, though, was top-ranked LSU, who for the second week in a row spotted an underdog extra points early then rolled to a victory and a cover. Last week LSU, as an 11-point favorite over Arkansas, spotted the Hogs 14 points, then exploded to a 41-17 win and the cover. Then Saturday the Tigers, as 12-point chalk in the SEC championship game vs. Georgia, spotted the Bulldogs 10 points before scoring the last 42 points of the game for the victory and cover.
LSU now moves on to a rematch with Alabama in the BCS championship game Jan. 9 in New Orleans. As of Monday morning most online sportsbooks are listing the Tigers as one-point favorites over the Tide.
In one of the more puzzling outcomes of recent weeks the Virginia Tech Hokies, who had risen to No. 3 in the USA Today poll while winning seven games in a row, lost for the second time this season to a schizophrenic Clemson squad, this time by a score of 38-10 in the ACC championship game. V Tech was favored by seven points, but got held to 56 yards rushing, and allowed the Tigers to run for 217 yards.
And Michigan State finished off the weekend for conference championship dogs by holding on for the cover in the inaugural Big Ten title game vs. Wisconsin. The Spartans, as 9-5-point underdogs, trailed early 21-7, rallied to take a 36-28 lead but allowed the Badgers to score late in the 42-39 Wisconsin win.
So on the weekend underdogs won two of six conference championship games outright and went 5-1 ATS.
