The undefeated Clemson Tigers square-off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets this upcoming Saturday night in a classic ACC showdown at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The kick-off in this one is slated for 8 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ABC.
While most people expected Florida State to be the top dog in the ACC this season it has been Clemson that has taken the nation by storm with a perfect 8-0 straight-up start (7-1 against the spread) that has it ranked fifth in the BCS standings and firmly in control of the Atlantic Division in the conference.
The Tigers have played just two games on the road this season, but one was a huge 23-3 victory over Virginia Tech as seven-point underdogs. They have averaged 40.6 points a game and the total has gone ‘over’ in six of their first eight games. The Tajh Boyd to Sammy Watkins connection has been deadly so far with 54 receptions for 819 yards and nine touchdowns. Overall, Boyd has passed for 2,379 yards and 24 scores while throwing just three interceptions along the way.
Georgia Tech was in perfect position to make a run up the standings as well, but dropped out of the top 25 with a disappointing 24-7 showing this past Saturday against Miami (FL) as a 2.5-point road underdog. This followed and even more shocking 24-21 loss to Virginia as a 7.5-point road favorite the week before.
The Yellow Jackets are now 6-2 SU (4-3-1 ATS) overall and 3-2 SU in the ACC-Coastal Division; a half-game in back of Virginia Tech. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of their last eight games overall and they are 4-0 SU (3-1 ATS) at home this season.
The one thing that has remained solid despite the two setbacks is a running game that is ranked fifth in the nation and averaging 321.1 yards a game. Georgia Tech has three backs with over 450 yards rushing so far led by Orwin Smith’s amazing average of 12.5 yards per carry on just 42 attempts.
Clemson is 7-0 ATS in its last seven games in the ACC and the total has stayed ‘under’ in nine of its last 12 games in the conference.
Georgia Tech is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games as a home underdog and the total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last nine games in the ACC.
Head-to-head in this series, the Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last six trips to Georgia Tech and the road team is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings. The total has stayed under in five of the last seven games between the two.
Clemson is on a roll and the Yellow Jackets are reeling which sets up perfectly for the Tigers to come away with a huge road victory this Saturday night that easily covers the 3.5 point spread.
