The BYU Cougars return to their old Mountain West stomping grounds this upcoming Friday night when they take-on the TCU Horned Frogs at Cowboys Stadium in front of a prime-time audience on ESPN. Game time for this one is set for 8:00 p.m. (ET).
BYU left the MWC after the 2010 season to compete as a Division-IA independent and so far is enjoying a very successful 2011 campaign after a couple of down years. It comes into this matchup at 6-2 straight-up (4-4 against the spread) after posting a 56-3 romp over Idaho State as a whopping 41.5-point home favorite this past Saturday. It was its fifth win in-a-row after a 1-2 SU start. The Cougars are 2-1 SU and ATS on the road this season and the total has stayed ‘under’ in five of their eight games overall.
This team has been well balanced across the board on offense with an average of 232.8 passing yards a game to go along with an average of 158.5 yards on the ground. BYU is scoring 26.8 points a game while giving-up an average of 21.5.
TCU’s chance to once again challenge for one of the top spots in the BCS standings quickly faded this season with a 50-48 opening-day loss to Baylor as a four-point road favorite. It has gone on to win five of its next six games including a 69-0 shutout of New Mexico this past Saturday as a 44.5-point home favorite. The Horned Frogs are currently 5-2 SU (4-3 ATS) overall and 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS) at home. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of their seven games so far.
While this Frogs’ team may not be has dynamic as some of the ones in the recent past, it still packs a punch with a rushing offense that is averaging 217.4 yards a game. TCU boasts three running backs with over 350 yards rushing led by Waymon James, who is averaging 7.8 yards a carry. Matthew Tucker is averaging five yards an attempt and leads the team with seven touchdowns on the ground.
The Cougars are 5-0 ATS in their last five games as an underdog and 5-1 ATS in their last six games on the road. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of their last six games as road underdogs.
The Horned Frogs are 0-5 ATS in their last five non-conference games. The total has gone ‘over’ in their last five games as home favorites.
These teams are still very familiar with one another having met every season for the past six years. TCU has a 4-2 edge both SU and ATS including a 31-3 victory last season as a 30-point home favorite. The total has stayed ‘under’ in the last three meetings.
This time around the final score should be much closer as the gap between the two teams has narrowed considerably. Look for the Horned Frogs to get the SU victory, but stick with BYU to get the point spread cover.
