Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Texas Longhorns
The Texas Longhorns face the Alabama Crimson Tide for all the marbles, as the winner of this game will be the national champion. Both teams are undefeated and this is the first time since 2005 that the national title game has been between two undefeated teams. Both Texas and Alabama are legit on both offense and defense and the Longhorns ranked 4th in the country averaging 40.7 points per game. Alabama's Mark Ingram was this year's Heisman winner and he will be facing a Texas rushing defense that ranked 1st in the nation only giving up 62.15 yards per game on the ground. The Longhorns have Colt McCoy leading them and he was a Heisman finalist and this season connected on 70.5% of his pass attempts.
This season Texas was 5-7 ATS and Alabama was 8-4 ATS.
In their last games Texas beat Nebraska 13-12 in the Big 12 Championship Game and Alabama beat Florida, snapping the Gators' 22 game winning streak, 32-13 in the SEC title game.
The Longhorns ranked 20th on offense this season led by McCoy (3,512 yds 27 TD 12 INT), who was also the 2nd leading rusher on the team. His receiving corps is one of the best in the nation led by WR Jordan Shipley (106 rec 1,363 yds 11 TD), who averaged just under 13 yards per reception this season. RB Tre' Newton and QB McCoy lead the Longhorns' rushing offense that ranked 55th in the nation this season. Texas will be facing the toughest defense they have faced all season, as the Tide ranked 2nd in the nation only giving up an average of 241.69 yards per game. The Tide's secondary has their hands full containing McCoy, but they are solid led by Javier Arenas (12 tackles for loss, 5 sacks) and Mark Barron (7 INT). If they can contain McCoy and force the Longhorns to win the game on the ground it gives them a good chance to win. The lower the score the more likely it is that Alabama will win their first National Championship since 1992.
Alabama is no slouch on offense, as they ranked 35th in the nation and are led by QB Greg McElroy (2,450 yds 17 TD 4 INT). His two main targets of WR's Julio Jones and Marquis Maze each averaged at least 13 yards per reception this season. The Texas defense, which ranked 3rd in the nation, led the nation with 24 interceptions this season so if they can contain Ingram, which is no easy task, they have a great chance to win this game. Ingram (1,542 yds 15 TD) is the key to Alabama's offense, as if he has a big game the Tide are very hard to beat.
The Tide have played in an NCAA-record 57 bowl games and they are tied with USC for the most wins with 31. The Longhorns have the second-most bowl appearances with 49.
