The Auburn Tigers will try and keep their hope of repeating as conference champions alive when they travel to Baton Rouge this Saturday to take on undefeated LSU at Tigers Stadium in this SEC-West Division clash. The game is slated to kick-off at 3:30 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
Auburn came in ranked 20th in the first BCS poll after grinding out a 17-6 victory over Florida this past Saturday as a three-point road underdog. The total stayed well ‘under’ the 50.5-point line. The win pushed the Tigers to 5-2 straight-up (3-4 against the spread) overall on the year and 3-1 SU in the SEC. The total has now stayed ‘under’ in their last four games after going ‘over’ in their first three this year.
Without the star-power of a Cam Newton, Auburn is quietly putting together a solid season behind an offense that is ranked 27th in the nation in rushing with an average of 197 yards a game and a defense that has given-up an average of just 17.8 points a game in its last four outings.
LSU is currently at the top of the heap in the BCS rankings with a perfect 7-0 SU (5-2 ATS) record overall. It is coming off a 38-7 romp over Tennessee as a 16.5-point road favorite this past Saturday after knocking-off four ranked opponents in its previous six games. The total has gone 3-3-1 over the course of the seven games.
The Tigers are firing on all pistons with an offense that is racking-up an average of 370 yards and 38.4 points a game to go along with a stingy defense that is giving-up an average of just 11.7 points a contest. The only thing that could derail them in this game is if they get caught looking past Auburn towards a Nov.5 showdown with Alabama. Fortunately, having a bye week between the games should prevent this from happening.
Auburn is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games as an underdog, but just 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games as an underdog on the road. It is 13-3 in its last 16 games played in the SEC and the total has stayed ‘under’ in 21 of its last 30 games as a road underdog.
LSU is 4-1 ATS in its last five games following s SU win, but just 5-12 ATS in its last 17 games following an ATS win. The total has stayed ‘under’ in 12 of its last 17 games as a home favorite and in three of its last five conference games.
Head-to-head in this series, the favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the home team is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the last meetings in Baton Rouge and in nine of the last 11 games overall.
While LSU is playing at an extremely high level, 21-points in a rivalry such as this is pretty hefty spread especially against an Auburn team that is playing better than expected. The home-town Tigers march to the national title does not get derailed this week, but the game stays close enough for the visiting Tigers to cover the point spread.
