The Washington Huskies, out of the PAC-12, square-off against the Big 12’s Baylor Bears in this season’s Valero Alamo Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Thursday, Dec. 29. The kick-off for this matchup is slated for 9 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Washington’s impressive 5-1 start this year quickly deteriorated over the second half of the season with just two wins in its last six games to finish 7-5 both straight-up and against the spread. The Huskies were 6-1 SU at home this season, but just 1-4 SU on the road. The total went 6-5-1 in their 12 games this season.
Despite averaging 31.5 points a game, the reason for the Huskies’ demise down the stretch was a defense that ended the regular season ranked 99th in the nation in points allowed; giving-up an average of 33.3 points a game. Washington gave-up 30 or more points in seven of its 12 games.
The Baylor Bears enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in recent memory with an overall record of 9-3 SU (7-4 ATS) and a 6-3 SU record in conference play. Some of the highlights included a 45-38 victory over then-No.5 Oklahoma as a 16.5-point home underdog and a season-ending 48-24 romp over in-state rival Texas as a 1.5-point home favorite. The Bears closed-out their schedule with five straight wins and a 4-1 record ATS. The total went ‘over’ in nine of their 11 games overall.
Much of Baylor’s success this season can be attributed to the play of Robert Griffin III. So much so that he ended-up winning this year’s Heisman Trophy as a result of his high level of play. Griffin threw for 3,998 yards and 36 touchdowns and added another 644 yards and nine TD’s on the ground. This ultimate duel threat helped Baylor average 43.5 points a game, which is the sixth-most in the country. The problem with the Bears has been a defense that is a bit too generous in letting its opponents in the end zone; giving-up an average of 35.7 points a game.
Washington is 5-1 ATS in its last six bowl games and 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games played in December. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of its last five games against the Big 12.
Baylor is 4-1 ATS in its last five games as a favorite and the total has gone ‘over’ in 16 of its last 21 games overall.
As mentioned before, the Huskies have the ability to put points on the board, but their defense will have its hands filled trying to slow down Griffin and the Bears’ offense. The 78.5-point total line is right on the money as Baylor scores enough points to win and cover the 9.5 point spread in a wild one.
