The Maryland Terrapins will be gunning for an upset when they invade The Pavilion this Saturday afternoon to take on the Villanova Wildcats in an ACC-Big East matchup. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
Maryland got their first win in the ACC this past Wednesday night with a 74-55 romp over Wake Forest as a 14-point road favorite. This followed a closer than expected 71-64 loss to Duke as a 14 ˝-point road underdog last Sunday. The Terrapins are now 11-5 straight-up overall and 6-4 against the spread.
Sophomore forward Jordan Williams has been a force for this team with 17.7 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. He is joined by senior guard-forward Cliff Tucker, who is averaging 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds and guard Terell Stoglin, who is averaging 9.9 points per game to account for over 50 percent of Maryland’s points.
The Terrapins are averaging 79 points a game and shooting 48.2 percent from the floor. They have struggled from the foul line; converting on just 63.1 percent of their shots and shooting just 33.3 percent from three-point range. One area that Maryland has been extremely good at is rebounds. It is currently ranked fifth in the nation; pulling down an average of 42.4 boards per game.
Villanova takes a brief break from its Big East schedule, where it is off to a 4-0 SU start. The Wildcats are coming off a convincing 88-74 win over No. 17 Louisville this past Wednesday as a four-point home favorite. This followed Sunday’s 72-61 victory over Cincinnati as a five-point home favorite. These wins raised their record to 15-1 SU overall and 7-5-1 ATS.
Led by a pair of Corey’s, Villanova is staking its claim as one of the top schools in the country and a legitimate contender to win the national championship. Senior guard Corey Stokes leads the ‘Cats with 17 points a game, while another senior guard Corey Fisher is averaging 15.3 points and 4.8 assists.
Antonio Pena (9.7 points and 7.1 rebounds), Maalik Wayns (13.3 points and 5.7 assists), and Mouphtaou Yarou (9.1 points and 7.4 rebounds) round out a very talented starting five. Villanova, as a team is averaging 78 points and 39.5 rebounds per game and shooting 46.1 percent from the field.
Maryland is 4-1 SU in its last five games on the road and 4-2 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last seven games.
