San Antonio (57-13, 39-29-2 ATS) has won six of its past seven games. The Spurs cruised past Golden State 111-96 on Monday, covering as 11-point favorites. They haven’t been too sharp against the spread, though, going just 3-5 in their past eight games on NBA odds.
Despite the win, it was tough for Spurs fans to smile. Tim Duncan played just four minutes before going down with an ankle sprain and he could miss the rest of the regular season, though the team is hoping for just two weeks. Perhaps the basketball gods were punishing San Antonio for its sense of humour; Duncan had sat out the previous game and was listed as “trop vieux”—French for “too old.”
With Duncan sidelined, Tiago Splitter is expected to earn more minutes. If the Golden State game is any indication, the young forward will be just fine. Splitter racked up 10 points and 14 rebounds against the Warriors, his first career double-double.
For the most part, though, the Spurs will turn to veteran guards Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. Parker was brilliant against Golden State, racking up 17 points and 15 assists.
After losing back-to-back games, Denver (42-29, 37-31-3 ATS) got back on track with a 123-90 win over the Toronto Raptors on Monday. The Nuggets have been impressive since shipping off franchise player Carmelo Anthony, going 9-4. They’ve been even better against the spread, going 12-1—including a seven-game winning streak.
Denver is also dealing with some injury problems. Backup Raymond Felton went down with a sprained ankle on Friday, leaving Ty Lawson as the only true point guard on the roster. Lawson answered the bell against Toronto, scoring 17 points in the first quarter to launch the blowout. He finished with 23 points, eight assists and four boards. Felton is hoping to play Wednesday night.
Nene continues to be the biggest benefactor since shipping Anthony and Chauncey Billups out of town. The center is averaging 17.0 points and 8.8 rebounds over his last eight games as the team leans on him more heavily every night. With forward Al Harrington finally shaking off his slump, the front court is looking very good.
San Antonio is 6-4 both straight up and against the spread in its last 10 games against Denver. The Spurs are 3-0 this season, covering two of those games, although they haven’t played the new-look Nuggets. The total has gone under in the past two games they’ve met; Sportsbook.com has set the total for Wednesday’s game at 210.5 points.
We commonly put little to no weight into historical trends but this one really stands out. The underdog is on a bankroll padding 10-1 streak. We're not go to buck the trend.
