The No. 7 seed San Antonio Spurs are in Phoenix tonight to face the #3 seed Suns for game two of their best-of-seven series in the semifinals of the NBA Western Conference playoffs with tip off slated for 9:00 P.M. (ET).
After their stunning 4-2 series victory over Dallas in the opening round, San Antonio knew that facing Phoenix, a team they will meet for the 10th time in the playoffs since 1992 was going to be an even bigger challenge than taking on their in-state rivals.
In game one of this series on Monday night, they fell behind by 10 points after the first half and never seemed to catch their breath against the relentless attack style of play that Phoenix threw at them. With George Hill pitted up against the Sun's Steve Nash there was little he could do to slow him down as Nash burned the Spurs for 17 of his game high 33 points in the first quarter alone to set the blistering pace.
Give San Antonio credit for keeping this one close as they opened the second half with a 20-7 run and actually took a 67-64 lead on a Manu Ginobili three pointer. They battled back again in the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run to cut the Suns lead to just one at 94-93. Unfortunately it was not enough as behind the play of Amar'e Stoudemire and Jason Richardson down the stretch, Phoenix was able to pull away for good to go onto win 111-102.
If the Spurs are going to have any chance tonight they are going to have to find a way to defend Nash much better than they did on Monday night. Richardson (27 points) and Stoudemire (23 points and 13 rebounds) also came up big for the Suns, but it was Nash that caused the most damage.
Offensively, Tim Duncan (20 points and 11 rebounds), Tony Parker (26 points), and Ginobili (27 points) put forth a solid effort and helped keep game one within reach, but against the star power of Phoenix that will not be enough. They are going to have to tighten up on defense to try and slow the Suns down, forcing them to play their style of ball.
With players like Nash, Stoudemire, and Richardson playing at such a high level, it is hard to believe that San Antonio will be able to come away with a win in the US Airway's Center in Phoenix. Look for the Suns to take full advantage of their home court to open up a 2-0 edge in this series.
