Division leaders meet for an NBA interconference battle Wednesday night as the Philadelphia 76ers host the San Antonio Spurs (7 pm Eastern).
In early betting action some online sportsbooks are listing Philadelphia as a 4.5-point favorite for Wednesday night's game, with an 'over/under' of 181.
San Antonio began its current nine-game road trip Monday night with an 89-84 win at Memphis. The Spurs built a 14-point lead late in the second quarter, blew that and fell down by five late in the third quarter, then rallied, holding the Grizzlies to 11 fourth-quarter points on their way to the victory.
So the Spurs, winners of five in a row, sit atop the Southwest Division, 2.5 games ahead of both Houston and Dallas. San Antonio also is tied with the Clippers for the two spot in the Western Conference standings, three games behind top-seeded Oklahoma City.
Philly picked up a big win Monday night, beating the visiting Lakers 95-90. The Sixers committed just four turnovers vs. LA, and they lead the league in averaging just under 11 turnovers per game. They also lead the league in allowing just 87 PPG.
So through Monday's play Philly, 6-1 over its last seven games, leads the Atlantic Division by four games over second-place Boston. The Sixers also sit in third place in the Eastern Conference, just a half-game back of No. 2 Miami and two games back of No. 1 Chicago.
Philly has been the best team in the league to bet on so far this season, going 17-7 ATS. The Sixers are also 13-3 SU and 12-4 ATS at home this season.
San Antonio is a respectable 15-11 ATS on the season. But the Spurs have struggled on the road, going 4-8 SU and 5-7 ATS on the room-service circuit.
On the injury front San Antonio is still playing without F Manu Ginobili, who's still dealing with a broken bone in his hand. On the other side of the scorer's table Philly F Elton Brand has missed recent action with a sprained thumb, and his status for Wednesday night is uncertain.
The 'over/unders' are 10-15 in Sixers games this season, which have averaged 183 total points, and 11-15 in Spurs games, which have averaged 191 points.
This is the first meeting this season between these two teams. Last year the Spurs and Sixers split their two games, each winning on their home court.
In NBA futures betting action Philly is getting right around 8/1 to win the Eastern Conference this season, and 30/1 to win the NBA title, while San Antonio is getting 9/1 to win the Western Conference and 25/1 to win the league championship.
Elsewhere on Wednesday's NBA betting board, in a Florida in-state battle 18-6 Miami visits 15-10 Orlando (7 pm Eastern); Eastern Conference playoff contenders meet when 16-7 Indiana visits 16-9 Atlanta (7:30 pm Eastern); 15-10 Denver hosts defending league champion Dallas (9 pm Eastern); and 14-11 Houston plays at 14-11 Portland (10 pm Eastern).
Sure the Spurs are on a 5 game winning streak straight up and against the spread, but the fact remains that they are only 4-8 on the road this season.
