Denver (15-9, 8-14-2 ATS) has been rather lackadaisical since its seven-game winning streak through November and early December. Since then, the Nuggets have won just twice in their last five games, including a 111-94 victory over Orlando on Tuesday. At least their funk on NBA odds seems to be over; Denver is 2-1 ATS in its past three games since a four-game losing streak.
Building momentum is going to be difficult considering all the injuries the team has endured. The newest addition to the mash unit is Chancey Billups. The veteran guard injured his wrist on November 20 against New Jersey and aggravated it during a recent road swing. He sat out against Orlando on Tuesday and will likely miss the Spurs game, too, if not more.
Billups was replaced by Ty Lawson against the Magic and played pretty well. He shot 6-12 from the field for 16 points while adding six assists and just two turnovers. Lawson has scored 16 or more points in three of his last four outings.
San Antonio (RECORD), of course, has been brilliant all season. The Spurs won but didn't cover against Milwaukee on Wednesday, pushing their record to 15-8-1 against the spread this season.
Lately, the Spurs are relying on suffocating defense to take care of business. It's a pretty rare occasion for an opponent to crack triple digits against San Antonio these days, and the team will likely continue to climb the rankings in fewest points allowed per game. That's pretty scary considering San Antonio was already among the top-five scoring teams in the NBA.
The Nuggets and Spurs haven't met yet this season. Though Denver has a 6-4 edge both straight up and against the spread in their past 10 meetings, the Spurs have actually won back-to-back games. San Antonio has also covered four of its last six games against Denver, including two straight. The total has gone under in four consecutive battles between San Antonio and Denver; Sportsbook.com has set the total for Thursday's game at 212 points.
