In an interesting matchup of Western Conference playoff contenders the Los Angeles Clippers host the Memphis Grizzlies for a Thursday night national TV NBA clash (10:30 pm Eastern, TNT).
Memphis started 3-6 this season, but then got hot and won seven games in a row, beating the Knicks and Bulls along the way. But playing their fourth game in five days Tuesday night in Portland the Grizz looked a bit haggard and had their winning steak snapped by a 97-84 loss to the Trailblazers.
So the Grizzlies sit in a tie for third place in the bunched-up Southwest Division, just a half-game out of first place.
The Clippers, meanwhile, have won eight of their last 12 games. They beat up on Toronto Sunday 103-91, but lost by 5 last night on the road versus the Lakers.
So going into their game vs. the Grizzlies the Clippers are tied for the Pacific Division lead with their same-city rivals.
Memphis is 4-5 straight-up on the road this season, but considering there are only seven teams in the Association with winning road records at the moment, that ain't too bad.
The Grizz are also 9-4 SU and 8-5 against-the-spread since losing F Zach Randolph to a knee injury. It's hoped he will return to action in March.
The Clippers, meanwhile, are a solid 8-2 at Staples Center this season.
Statistically speaking these two teams are fairly even. But one thing that concerns us about the Clippers is their 66 percent shooting rate from the free-throw line.
Also on the injury front Clippers G Chris Paul has missed the last five games with a pulled hamstring, but he was listed as probable to play Wednesday night vs. the Lakers.
Last year the Clippers swept the two-game season series from the Grizzlies, winning 82-81 in Memphis and 110-103 in LA.
Memphis is 8-9 on the 'over/unders' this season, as Grizzlies games have averaged 188 points.
The Clippers are 7-7 on the totals, as their games have averaged 193 points.
For NBA futures bettors out there the Grizzlies can be found at upwards of +2,200 to win the Western Conference championship this season, and at +6,000 to win the NBA title, while the Clippers can be gotten at as much as +625 to win the West and +1,200 to win the league title.
The Clippers played in a tough game last night versus the Lakers and I feel that they may run out of gas versus the Grizzlies.
Take the Memphis Grizzlies +3.5 at 5Dimes
