Tonight will be round two between two AL heavyweights as the Texas Rangers take on the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in the second of a three-game set. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (ET) and the game will be available on MLB TV.
Texas found itself on the wrong end of a Game 1 slugfest in a 6-5 loss to the Tigers as a 109 road underdog. It was the Rangers sixth loss in their last 10 games and they are now just a game ahead of Los Angeles in the AL West with an overall record of 61-49. They are 35-21 at home, but just 26-28 on the road.
This team’s yo-yo ride through the month of July produced a 12-game winning streak as well as losses in five of its last seven games to close out the month. Pitching remains solid with a 3.76 team ERA and the Rangers are ranked second in the AL in hitting with a team batting average of .276, but they continue to be on the losing end of a number of close games.
Matt Harrison is expected to get the start tonight for Texas. The left-hander comes into his first start of the new month with a hot hand after going 3-0 in July with an ERA of 2.04. On the year, he is 9-7 with a 2.94 ERA in 20 starts. Harrison is just 1-3 lifetime against the Tigers with a 7.11 ERA.
Detroit has also been up and down as of late with a 9-8 record since the All-Star break. Tuesday’s win pushed its record on the year to 58-51 and extended its lead over Cleveland in the AL Central to three games. The Tigers are 26-27 on the road this season and 32-24 at home.
Consistency throughout the lineup continues to be an issue for Detroit. It has scored three runs or less in seven of its last 17 games while averaging 6.6 runs a game in the other 10. The Tigers are currently ranked third in the AL in hitting with a .267 team batting average and fifth in scoring with 490 runs.
Detroit’s newest acquisition, Doug Fister will be on the mound in this one. It has been a hard-luck season so far for this right-hander as he is 3-12 overall, but sports a respectable 3.33 ERA in 21 previous starts with Seattle. Fister is 1-3 with a 4.78 ERA against the Rangers.
John Tumpane will be the home-plate umpire for tonight’s game which could slightly favor the pitchers. In 12 previous called-games, the total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of them with the total number of runs scored averaging 6.83 a game.
Texas is 44-29 as a favorite this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last six games, but is 55-51-4 overall.
Detroit is 19-24 as an underdog. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of its last five games and in 56 of its 109 games this season.
Head-to-head this season, the Tigers are now 5-2 overall and 3-1 at Comerica Park. The total is 3-3-1 overall but has gone ‘over’ in three of the last four meetings.
