The Tampa Bay Rays take on a familiar foe tonight in the first of a three-game weekend set with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. and it will be available on MLB TV.
Tampa Bay’s 4-1 victory over Kansas City as a 180 home favorite on Thursday completed a four-game sweep of the Royals. The good news is the Rays are now 7-3 in their last 10 games and 63-54 overall. The bad news is they are still 9.5 games in back of Boston in the division and 8.5 games in back of New York in the wildcard race. They are 31-28 at home this season and 32-26 on the road.
Pitching has remained fairly solid for Tampa all season long with a 3.69 team ERA, but it has struggled with consistency at the plate. The Rays are ranked 13th in the American League in hitting with a team batting average of .244 and seventh in scoring with 501 runs.
Tampa will go with David Price as its starter in this one. The left-hander did not look especially sharp his last time out, giving up four earned runs on seven hits in just 4.2 innings of work. The entire season as been a bit of a struggle for Price with a 9-10 record and a 3.89 ERA in 24 starts. He is 3-2 against the Yankees with an ERA of 3.97.
New York took two of three from Los Angeles this week after pounding out a 6-5 win on Thursday as a 201 home favorite. It is now 71-45 on the year and just a game behind the Red Sox in the AL East. The Yankees are 32-22 on the road and 39-23 at home.
his lineup continues to get the job done for New York with an average of 6.3 runs in its last 10 games. This has actually been the case all season long as the Yankees are ranked second in the AL in scoring with an average of 5.36 runs a game. Curtis Granderson has led the way with a MLB-best 93 RBI.
C.C. Sabathia is slated to be on the mound for New York. He is coming off another rough outing against his nemesis, the Red Sox, in which he gave up seven runs in six innings. The Yankees ace last faced the Rays on July 21 and gave up just two earned runs in eight innings but still got tagged with the loss. Sabathia is 16-6 on the year with an ERA of 2.81.
Tampa Bay is 22-21 as an underdog this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of its last four games and 50-61-6 overall on the year.
New York is 55-30 as a favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of its last five games, but is 50-56-10 this season.
Head-to-head this year, the Yankees have a slight 5-4 edge overall and are 2-1 at home. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of the nine games, including the last three straight.
MLB Betting Pick
I'm expecting Sabathia to return to form, but the moneyline has no value, so with Price starting for the Rays, I believe the total holds the best value. Take the UNDER 7.5 at 5Dimes the best sportsbook for American bettors!
