The San Francisco Giants will look to rebound from an ugly outing on Tuesday night when they take on the Philadelphia Phillies tonight in the second of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
A last-minute pitching change led to the demise of the San Francisco last night as Barry Zito was shelled early in a 7-2 loss as a 146 road underdog. The loss dropped the Giants to 59-44 on the year and cut their lead over Arizona in the NL West to just three games. They are 32-18 at home this season and 27-26 on the road.
For the most part, San Francisco’s pitching has been superb this season with a 3.12 team ERA. Run support has been a whole other issue as the Giants are ranked 13th in the NL in hitting with a team batting average of .241 and ranked 15th in scoring with 371 total runs.
Tim Lincecum was scheduled to get the start last night, but the lingering effects of the flu delayed his turn in the rotation until tonight. He is 8-8 on the year with a 2.90 ERA in 21 starts. His last time out against the Dodgers, Lincecum was a victim of no run support after a solo home run tagged him with the loss after pitching an otherwise perfect seven innings. He is 2-1 with a 3.17 ERA against the Phillies.
Philadelphia keeps rolling towards the postseason with an 8-3 record since the All-Star break and a six-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East. The Phillies have the best record in the Majors at 65-37 and are 27-21 on the road and 38-16 at home this year.
It is no surprise that pitching has been the primary force behind Philadelphia’s success this season with the most formidable starting rotation in the league. This staff is tied with the Giants atop the NL with a 3.12 team ERA. The scary thing about this team is that its bats are starting to warm up with an average of 5.71 runs in its last seven games.
Cole Hamels is slated to get the start tonight for the Phillies. He has been lights out this season with a 2.62 ERA and an overall record of 12-5 in 21 previous starts. Hamels has given up two or less earned runs in nine of his last ten starts and has pitched eight or more innings in six of those games. He is 4-2 against the Giants with an ERA of 4.67.
Mark Carlson will be behind home plate tonight. He is 9-7-3 against the total line in 19 called games this season. The average run total in his games is 8.84, which is just slightly higher than the league average.
San Francisco is 21-20 as an underdog this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last seven games and is 41-55-7 on the year.
Philadelphia is 53-27 as a favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in its last four games, and is dead even at 47-47-8 overall.
Head-to-head, last night’s game was the first between the two teams since the Giants eliminated the Phillies from the NLCS in six games on their way to winning the World Series last year. The 2010 regular season series was tied 3-3 with each team going 2-1 at home. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of the last four meetings.
