The San Diego Padres tangle with their second straight NL East opponent when they kick-off a four-game extended weekend series with the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Citizens Bank Park. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast on the MLB Network.
San Diego is fresh off a three-game sweep of Florida including a 5-3 victory yesterday as a 158 road underdog to run their record to 4-3 since the All-Star Break. The Padres are now 44-55, but a full 13 games behind San Francisco in the NL West. They are 20-30 at home and 24-25 on the road.
Pitching remains the strong point of this team with the third-best ERA in the National League at 3.16. Unfortunately, the run support from the Padres’ lineup has been dismal with an average of just 3.47 runs per game, which is ranked last in the NL.
Cory Luebke is slated to get the start for San Diego tonight. The left-hander will be making his fifth start since joining the rotation from the bull pen and is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA in the previous four outings. Overall he is 3-3 this year with an ERA of 2.57.
Philadelphia continues to roll towards a fifth consecutive division title with a 4-2 record since the break and a MLB-best 61-36 record overall. The Phillies have a four-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East and are 27-21 on the road this year and 34-15 at home.
Much has been made about Philadelphia’s extremely talented starting rotation, but the entire staff is having a great season with a team ERA of 3.12. To add even more fuel to this fire, closer Brad Lidge, who has yet to pitch this season, is expected to be activated from the DL for this game, but his availability remains questionable.
The Phillies will counter with a left-hander of their own as it is Cole Hamels’ turn in the rotation. He is coming off one of his worst outings of the year after giving up seven earned runs on eight hits in a loss to the Mets. It was the first time he gave up more than two earned runs in his last 10 starts. Overall on the year, Hamels is 11-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 20 starts. He is 5-2 with an ERA of 2.42 lifetime against the Padres.
San Diego is 29-34 this season as an underdog. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of the last seven games, but is 46-48-5 overall this year.
Philadelphia is 49-26 as a favorite. The total has stayed ‘under’ in its last three games and is 43-46-8 this season.
Head-to-head, the Phillies have won 14 of the last 16 meetings dating back to the 2009 season including all four games they have played this year. The total has stayed ‘under’ in the last eight games.
