Big Apple bragging rights are on the line this weekend as the Yankees and the Mets renew their cross town interleague rivalry tonight at Citi Field in the first of a three-game series. Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on the MLB Network.
The Yankees are churning along on all cylinders with five straight victories and an 8-2 record in their last 10 games. They are coming off a three-game sweep of Milwaukee in which they outscored the Brewers 22-4. New York is now an AL-best 48-31 and 2.5 games ahead of Boston in the AL East. It is 28-18 at home and 20-13 on the road.
The lineup will get a boost with Derek Jeter coming off the DL early next week, but the Yankees have not skipped a beat since he went down in mid-June with 12 wins in 15 games. New York is ranked fifth in the AL in hitting with a .259 team batting average, but it ranks first in scoring with an average of 5.33 runs a game. Mark Teixeira has led the way with a team-high 63 RBI and 25 home runs.
Ivan Nova is slated to get the start tonight for the Yankees. He is 7-4 on the year with a 4.26 ERA in 15 starts. After pitching an eight-inning gem against Cincinnati on June 20 in which he gave up one earned run on four hits, Nova got tagged with six hits and four earned runs in his last outing against Colorado.
Cross town the Mets having been making some noise of their own with a 6-2 record over their last eight games but are coming off a 5-2 loss to Detroit on Thursday as a 210 road underdog. They are now 41-40 overall and 9.5 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East. New York actually has a better road record (23-20) than they do at home (18-20).
What makes the Mets recent stretch even more impressive is the fact that they outscored their opponents 62-38 in their last eight games. They are ranked second in the NL in hitting with a .264 team batting average and fourth in scoring with 369 runs. Carlos Beltran leads the team in RBI with 54 and Jose Reyes leads in total hits with 121.
Jon Niece is expected to be on the mound for the Mets. He left the game with a rapid heartbeat in his last outing but has been cleared to make his regularly scheduled start. Niece is 7-6 with a 3.67 ERA in 16 previous starts this year, but 6-2 in his last 10 with an ERA of 3.06.
The Yankees are 37-20 as a favorite this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last nine games and is 35-36-8 overall.
The Mets are 26-25 as an underdog. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of its last five games and in 46 of its 81 games this season.
Head-to-head, the Yankees took two out of three in the Bronx in late May, but the series was tied 3-3 in 2010. The total has gone ‘over’ in two of the three games this season, but stayed ‘under’ in four of six last year.
