MLB Betting Info: June 12

If you were asked to name the top betting option in Major League Baseball over the last week, who would you say? The likely answers would be the Red Sox, the Yankees, the Dodgers, or at least one team in contention - but all of those answers would be wrong. Believe it or not, the team you should have been betting on was Colorado.

The Rockies are on a roll and went into their Thursday game against Milwaukee having won seven straight. That winning streak included a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals during which they outscored the Cards 33-9. What was even more surprising was that the Rockies had only won 20 games all season before their torrid streak began. The part that should make bettors cringe is that Colorado won all seven games on the road, and they were the underdog in all seven. That’s a lot of underdog cash that most bettors likely missed out on.

The big question now is will the Rockies continue to win this weekend when they return to Coors Field? With interleague play back on the schedule the Rockies host the Mariners, and judging by the Rockies’ scheduled pitchers they definitely could keep it up. Friday’s starter Ubaldo Jimenez has been solid in his last two starts, while Saturday starter Jason Marquis is 4-1 in his last five trips to the mound. Colorado may not be the underdog anymore this weekend, but that doesn’t mean they can’t keep winning.

The pitching matchup that bettors may want to get a piece of this weekend is in the Giants-Athletics series. On Friday Giants ace Tim Lincecum faces Oakland rookie Vin Mazzaro. The immediate response from most bettors would be to go with the reigning NL Cy Young winner. However, Mazzaro may actually be the smart play as an underdog. In his first two starts Mazzaro has gone 13 2-3 innings without allowing a single run. If he can keep that streak going against the Giants the A’s could win as a nice underdog against Lincecum.
