The Los Angeles Angels will look to make up some ground in the AL West when they take on the Seattle Mariners tonight in the first of a three-game series. Game time from Safeco Filed in Seattle is set for 10:10 p.m. (ET) and it will be available on MLB TV.

Los Angeles finds itself five games in back of Texas in the division with an overall record of 31-36. Last week the Angels followed up a three-game sweep at the hands of Tampa Bay by dropping two of three to Kansas City over the weekend. They are now just 2-8 in their last 10 games. LA is 15-20 at home this season but 16-16 on the road.

With the exception of the seven runs it scored in Saturday’s win over the Royals, Los Angeles’s offense has been non-existent in its last 10 games with a total of 22 runs. It is ranked eighth in the AL with a team batting average of .254 and ranked 11th in runs scored with 248. To make matters worse, Alberto Callaspo will be out of the lineup indefinitely with a hamstring injury. Torii Hunter leads the team with 32 RBI and Mark Trumbo leads in home runs with 11.

Dan Haren will get the start for LA in this one. He is 5-4 in 14 previous starts and has an ERA of 2.41. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings of work against the Rays his last time out and got tagged with the loss. Lifetime against the Mariners he is 7-4 with a 2.44 ERA.

Seattle continues to be one of the surprise teams this season with an overall record of 34-32. It is just 1.5 games in back of the Rangers in the West after a four-game split with Detroit this past weekend. It has kept pace with Texas in the month of June as both teams are 5-5 in their last 10. The Mariners are 16-17 on the road and 18-15 at home.

Offense has also been an issue for this team as it is averaging just 3.65 runs per game. Fortunately, the Mariners’ pitching has compensated for this lack of production with the second-best team ERA in the AL at 3.41. Justin Smoak leads the team with 38 RBI and 12 home runs and Ichiro Suzuki leads in total hits with 70.

Jason Vargas will be on the mound for Seattle tonight. The left hander is 4-3 this season with a 3.94 ERA in 13 previous starts. He is coming off a no-decision against the White Sox in which he gave up seven hits and three earned runs in 7.1 innings of work. Vargas is 3-2 against the Angels with a 2.12 ERA.

Los Angeles is 16-18 as a favorite this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last 10 games and is 27-33-7 overall this year.

Seattle is 19-20 as an underdog. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of its last 10 games and is 29-31-6 overall.

Head-to-head, Vargas pitched the Mariners to a 3-0 victory as a 136 home underdog on May 18 and Doug Fister out-dueled Haren on May 19 to give the Mariners the 2-1 win as a 134 home dog. The total stayed well ‘under’ the 6.5 line in both games. The Angels won 14 of 18 games in 2010 and the total stayed ‘under’ in five of the final nine games.

MLB Betting Pick

Stick with the ‘under’ once again as both pitchers should be able to keep the runs scored to a minimum. Seattle as a home dog also remains a solid play as the Mariners score just enough to take the early edge in this series.
