The Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox kick-off a four-game series tonight at Fenway Park in a battle between two teams embroiled in their division race. Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
Cleveland’s chances of winning the AL Central are starting to look a little bleaker after losing eight of its last 10 games including a 5-3 setback to Kansas City on Sunday as a 123 home favorite. This latest loss dropped the Indians to 53-52 on the year and 2.5 games in back of Detroit in the division. They are 29-24 at home and 24-28 on the road.
Everything that went right for Cleveland in its amazing first-half run has suddenly hit the skids since coming off the All-Star break. The Indians have only managed to score an average of 3.38 runs per game compared to a season average of 4.20 and are now ranked ninth in the AL in pitching with a 3.99 team ERA.
Josh Tomlin is scheduled to be on the mound tonight for Cleveland. The right-hander is 11-5 this season with an ERA of 4.01 in 21 previous starts. He has given up a total of 14 earned runs in his last four starts, but pitched eight strong innings against the Angels last Tuesday. Tomlin is 1-1 against the Red Sox with a 3.21 ERA.
Boston continues to hold its ground in the AL East by matching the Yankees win-for-win with a 7-3 record in its last 10 games. The Red Sox come into this series fresh off a 5-3 victory over Chicago as a 111 road underdog to take the weekend series two games to one. They are now an AL-best 66-40 and two games ahead of New York in the division. Boston is 33-21 on the road this season and 33-19 at home.
The power throughout the Red Sox’s lineup continues to carry this team with an average of 7.13 runs in its last eight games. They lead the Majors in both hitting and scoring with a team batting average of .281 and a total of 586 runs. Adrian Gonzalez has done the most damage with 90 RBI and 18 home runs, but Boston has three other players in the lineup with at least 60 runs batted in.
John Lackey is slated to get the start tonight for the Red Sox. Against Kansas City last Wednesday, he got tagged for 11 hits and four runs, but once again benefitted from some generous run support to earn his fourth straight win. Lackey is now 9-8 overall with a 6.20 ERA. He is 6-7 lifetime against the Indians with an ERA of 4.07.
Cleveland is 31-34 as an underdog this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last eight games and is 49-49-7 overall this season.
Boston is 51-32 as a favorite. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of its last four games, but is 52-45-9 on the year.
Head-to-head this season, the Indians hold a 4-2 edge, but all six games were played in Cleveland. The total stayed ‘under’ in four of them.
