Opening Moneyline Odds: Mike Leake (+110) vs. Gio Gonzalez (-120) at 5Dimes.com
The Cincinnati Reds will make a rare appearance at the Oakland Coliseum to play a three game interleague series with the Athletics starting tonight at 10:05 P.M. (ET).
Cincinnati comes into this game on a bit of a slide, having lost six out of their last seven including dropping three straight to Seattle over the weekend. They are currently 37-33, 1 ½ games in back of St. Louis in the NL Central. The Reds are 14-16 SU on the road and 16-20 ATS as an underdog. Against the over/under line they have gone 34-29-7 with the total staying under in six out of their last seven games on the road.
Rookie right hander Mike Leake will be on the mound tonight for Cincinnati. In 13 previous starts he is 5-1 with an ERA of 3.02. In his last outing he only lasted six innings, giving up nine hits and five earned runs in a loss to the Dodgers which was the first of his career.
In the Reds recent slide their bats have suddenly gone quiet. They have only managed to score 13 runs in their last seven games and have been shut out three times. Their .274 team batting average still ranks them first in the NL and their 337 runs scored ranks them second. Scott Rolen continues to lead the way with 45 RBI's and 14 HR's.
Oakland has had some troubles of their own lately, dropping seven of their last 10 games and four of their last five. They are now 34-37, a full eight games behind Texas in the AL West. They have played well at home going 21-13 SU at the Coliseum this year. As a favorite the A's are 16-9 ATS and have gone 31-35-5 against the over/under line. The total has gone under in eight of Oakland's last 12 home games.
Gio Gonzalez will get the start tonight for the A's. The left hander is currently 6-5 in 14 starts and has a 4.21 ERA. In his last start he only lasted five innings, giving up eight hits and six earned runs in a loss to the Cubs. Tonight will be his first career start against Cincinnati.
Oakland has struggled with consistency at the plate this year. They have a .264 team batting average, which is ranked seventh in the AL and their 284 runs scored ranks them 12th. Their most productive player has been Kevin Kouzmanoff. He leads the team with 79 hits, 36 RBI's, and seven HR's.
Rankin's Pick
With both teams playing poorly something has to give tonight for one of them. Oakland has beaten the Reds eight out of the last nine games they have played including taking five out of six at home (although they haven't played since 2007). Take the A's -120 at Sportsbook
