The Chicago White Sox will try and even things up tonight after a tough loss to the Los Angeles Angels in the first of a quick two-game series at Angels Stadium. Game time is set for 10:05 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.

Last night’s 5-4 loss as a 144 road underdog was Chicago’s fourth in its last six games. It is now 63-64 on the year and 6.5 games behind Detroit in the AL Central Division race. The White Sox are 29-36 at home this season, but a respectable 34-28 on the road.

Consistency at the plate as been an issue for the White Sox over their past 10 games as they have averaged 6.4 runs a game in five wins during this span, but just 2.4 runs in five losses. Right fielder Carlos Quentin remains doubtful for this game with a wrist injury.

Chicago will send Zach Stewart to the mound tonight. He is taking Philip Hunter’s spot in the rotation after Hunter was struck in the face by a line drive last Thursday. Stewart has been primarily working as a relief pitcher since coming to White Sox in a trade with Toronto. He is 1-2 with a 3.74 ERA in five previous starts this season.

Los Angeles continues to keep Texas in its sights in the AL West with five straight victories including the thrilling walk-off win in the ninth inning last night. The Angels are now 70-59 and just 3.5 games in back of the Rangers in the division. They are 33-31 on the road and 37-28 at home.

The bats have come to life in LA’s recent winning streak with 29 runs in the last five games. This is in sharp contrast to the 3.93 runs per game it has averaged this season, which is ranked 11th in the American League.

Fortunately the Angels’ pitching has remained strong and they will have one of the best on the mound tonight with Jered Weaver getting the start. He is 14-6 on the year with a 2.10 ERA in 26 previous starts. Weaver gave up eight earned runs to the Blue Jays on Aug. 13, but bounced back by holding Texas to one run on six hits his last time out. He is 5-2 against the White Sox with an ERA of 1.81.

Larry Vanover will be the home-plate umpire in tonight’s game which could slightly favor the ‘over’. The total has gone ‘over’ in 12 of the 21 games he has called this season and the average runs scored in each game were 8.88.

Chicago is 32-29 as an underdog this season. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of its last four games, but is 50-67-10 overall.

Los Angeles is 47-29 as a favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of its last four games and is 53-64-12 on the year.

Head-to-head this season, the Angels have now won five of seven games overall, but are just 2-2 at home. The total has gone ‘over’ in the last four meetings.

Spread Betting Pick

Weaver lasted seven innings against Chicago earlier this season, holding the White Sox to just three runs. Tonight should be more of the same as Los Angeles runs its winning streak to six.
