The Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers kick-off a four-game set tonight at Rangers Ballpark in a showdown between the two best hitting teams in the Major Leagues. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on the MLB Network.
Boston remains in an all-out dog fight with the Yankees in the AL East with an overall record of 77-49. It has gone 5-5 in its last 10 games but still only trails New York by half a game. The Red Sox are 38-24 at home and 39-25 on the road.
The power in this lineup has come through all season long with the best team batting average (.278) in the league. Boston is also the highest scoring team in the Majors with an average of 5.32 runs per game. Injuries continue to take away a sizable chunk of production with David Ortiz listed as doubtful and Kevin Youkilis still on the DL.
Erik Bedard is slated to get the start for the Red Sox in this one. He is 4-8 on the year with an ERA of 3.44. The left-hander is still searching for his first win with the team after spending most of the season with Seattle. Lifetime against the Rangers, Bedard is 4-3 with a 3.22 ERA.
Texas is coming off a 10-0 pasting as a 115 road favorite at the hands of the White Sox. It was its second straight loss after winning seven of its previous eight games. The Rangers are now 73-55 overall and have a four-game lead over the Angels in the AL West. They are 34-32 on the road and 39-23 at home.
This is another team that has been able to hit the ball all over the park this season. Texas has the second-best team batting average (.277) in the Majors and is second in scoring with an average of 5.09 runs a game. The Rangers’ lineup has also been hampered with injuries with Adrian Beltre still on the DL.
Texas will counter with its own southpaw as C.J. Wilson is expected to be on the mound tonight. He held the Angels to just two runs in seven innings his last time out to improve his record to 12-5 on the year. He has a 1.21 WHIP and an ERA of 3.20. Wilson is 3-1 against the Red Sox with a 1.69 ERA.
Boston is 17-8 as an underdog this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last eight games and is 58-59-9 on the year.
Texas is 55-33 as a favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in seven of its last 10 games and is 66-57-5 overall this season.
