The Bookmakers currently have the Chicago Cubs (+250) as the favorites to win the NL Pennant in 2008. The Cubs currently have the best record in the National League and are in the lead in the NL Central by 3.5 games. The Cubs are winning with pitching, as the Cubbies currently have the best ERA in the NL (3.61) and have scored the most runs in the NL (380). Will this be the year that the Cubs end their long drought? The Phillies (+400) are also playing well and have the 2nd best record in the NL. The Phillies are a tough team to face, as they are 4th in the NL in ERA (3.82) and 2nd in runs scored (375). The Diamondbacks (+400) started the season strong, but have come down to earth after a torrid start. Still they have a formidable starting rotation and they will be tough to beat if they make the playoffs.
The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals, both +650, are also teams that have a good shot, but have to make up some ground on the league leaders. The Mets have the talent, but have been a disappointment so far this season. If Pedro Martinez comes back strong from his injury the Mets may make a 2nd half push. The Cardinals are hanging around, but their pitching needs to improve, as they rank 7th in the NL in ERA (4.11).
The Braves (+1000) have the 2nd best ERA in the NL (3.72), but their offense, besides the hot hitting Chipper Jones, has been erratic. How long both John Smoltz and Tom Glavine are on the DL will have an effect on the Braves season. The Dodgers (+1200) have good pitching, but their offense has been dismal, as they rank 12th in runs scored in the NL (292). Manager Joe Torre has to work some magic in La La land just for the Boys in Blue to make the post season. The Marlins (+1000) were in 1st place in the NL East for most of the year, but now are starting to slide down in the standings.
Out of the rest of the teams the San Diego Padres (+8000) are the only ones that have a shot to win the NL Pennant. They were the favorites to win the NL West in 2008, but had a horrible start to the season. They are playing much better now and are currently only 6.5 games back of the Diamondbacks in the division. They also have reigning CY Young winner Jake Peavey healthy again and the ageless Greg Maddux. The Padres have the talent to make a 2nd half push. The Brewers, Rockies, Giants, and Astros can play spoiler but they will have to make a run like the Rockies did last year to even make the post season, much less win the NL Pennant.
