The 2011 Grey Cup finalists are certainly not matching up the top teams that the bookmakers were expecting when the regular season began. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were the longest odds of any CFL team to win the Grey Cup in 2011 with preseason of odds of +1700. The BC Lions were certainly not the betting choice either with a future line of +825 before the regular season kicked off.
The betting lines opened with the BC Lions listed as a 6.5 point favorite on the point spread with the total set at 50.5. Heavy public wagering action has driven line up to 7 at most online sportsbooks and some lines-makers have started to post 7.5.
Montreal is the two-time defending Grey Cup champs but they enter the 2011 CFL season as co-favorites to win the league championship.
Point Spread: BC Lions -7
Total: 50.5
Even two weeks ago, the Alouettes were favoured on most preseason Grey Cup odds listings, but the Stampeders have pulled even with them. At shops such as 5Dimes.com, both teams are listed currently at +290 (meaning a $100 wager returns $290 in profit – not bad at all!).
Hamilton is the next favorite position at 5Dimes and they open the season at +725. Saskatchewan is close behind at +750 as those teams appear to be the second-best teams in their respective divisions – Hamilton in the East, the Roughriders in the West.
BC Lions have not won a title since 2006 and are +825 to return to Grey Cup glory in 2011. Also in the West, Edmonton is +875 odds to open the year.
Oddsmakers peg the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the longest shot on the board at +1700. That is still better than the NHL’s Jets, who just returned to the NHL after purchasing the Atlanta franchise and relocating this year.
Toronto is +1250 and not given much of a chance in the competitive East.
Montreal opens defence of their Grey Cup crown on Thursday against the BC Lions, while the other teams get rolling on Canada Day weekend. While many look at Montreal and see an automatic victory, CFL bettors and trend watchers know the opposite has been true when the Lions come to town in recent years.
In 19 games at Montreal, the Lions have won 13 of them. And they have dominated against the spread as well, going 11-2 ATS in the past 13 visits to Quebec.
The favored Stamps will host the Toronto Argonauts while Hamilton welcomes the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Edmonton faces Saskatchewan in the other Week 1 battle, the results of which will case the Grey Cup future lines to move around next week.
